In her last film, THE NEED FOR SPEED, Katharina Otto took on bike messengers,
a subject that most people think little about, and managed to convince
audiences world wide that these crazy messengers are a fascinating sub-culture,
always on the edge. To this day tourists seek out the film's star, messenger
"Steve the Greek" to get a picture of themselves standing along
side him. This talent for making the ordinary extraordinary led her to
make BEAUTOPIA. She sets out with a similar goal in mind, to take the
popular subject of modeling, and how the world a side of this glamourous
life that is what you would least expect.
It was her experience as a journalist for publications
such as Vogue and Town & Country that sidelined her from narrative films,
into the world of documentary. Otto was also responsible for THE SECOND
GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD.
Although she was raised in Europe, Otto prefers to live
in New York and in the midst of the independent film community.
Otto received both her BA in political Science and Philosophy
and her MFA in film from Columbia University. She also has a formal education
in acting from the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting.
